These Wounds Will Never Healed
These pieced-together, painful memories and imagined last moments are part of a gaping wound inside me that still festers — still refuses to heal. Natasha Trethewey, author of Memorial Drive: A Daughter’s Memoir, has a wound like this, too. A non-healing wound is generally defined as a wound that will not heal within four weeks. If a wound does not heal within this usual time period, the cause is usually found in underlying conditions that have either gone unnoticed or untreated. A deep wound tends to heal slower, since some membranes and skin glands can possibly be damaged in the injury. A severe deep wound may even break skin inner membranes and hurt muscles and tendons, even bones. Therefore, with certain cases of deep wounds, medications and sutures might be required. The wound healing process is not only complex but also fragile, and it is susceptible to interruption or failure leading to the formation of non-healing chronic wounds. Factors that contribute to non-healing chronic wounds are diabetes, venous or arterial disease, infection, and metabolic deficiencies of old age.
